THE FRENCH ASSOCIATION FOR BIOINDUSTRIES
(Organisation Nationale Interprofessionnelle des Bioindustries)
A Non-Profit Association
Who are we?
ORGANIBIO was founded in 1984 by three trade associations:
ANIA: Association Nationale des Industries Agroalimentaires
(National Association of Agro-Food Industries)
LEEM: (formerly SNIP): Les Entreprises du Médicament (Drug
Companies Association)
UIC: Union des Industries Chimiques (Union of French Chemical
Industries) and a scientific association:
ADEBIO: Association for the Development of Biotechnology
As a result, ORGANIBIO represents virtually all
the segments of the French bioscience industry, particularly
biotechnology with applications in pharmaceuticals, crop protection, agro-food,
etc.
The representative nature of the organization enables it to
be the acknowledged spokesman of this industrial grouping both
in France (government ministries, state-funded research bodies, etc.) as well
as at a pan-European and international level (European Union, similar foreign
structures).
- ORGANIBIO has successfully taken action, following consultations
with its members, to defend the interests of the French bioscience
sector and to promote its further development:
- Access to internationally competitive prices for agriculturally-produced
raw materials required for industrial fermentation processes.
- Introduction of guidelines for good industrial practices making it
possible to develop regulations tailored to the constant growth in scientific
knowledge (AFNOR standards).
- Creation of European standards by pooling the experience acquired in
France with the guidelines for good industrial practices (CEN
standards).
- Active presence in national, European and international negotiations
concerning regulations governing biosecurity and environmental protection
(ongoing).
- Definition of a common position shared by the entire French bioscience
industry concerning issues related to industrial property (European and
EU patents) and the lobbying of national and European decision-makers
in this area (ongoing).
- ORGANIBIO is the voice of the French bioscience
sector whenever the industrial grouping needs to express its opinion (national
and EU R&D programs, the Rio Convention on Biodiversity, the Geneva Convention
on Biological Weapons, etc.) or to encourage the public authorities to give
priority status to actions in favor of biotechnology.
- ORGANIBIO both organizes and manages long-term actions
bringing together several member companies and state-funded research bodies,
such as multi-centric research programs:
- Strain banks,
- High-performance host-vector systems (CHVP),
- Computer-aided macro-molecule design (CM2AO),
takes part in events of interest to the industrial grouping
(publications, symposia, conferences, etc.) and facilitates
access to the European Union’s programs in favor of small- to medium-sized
enterprises (BIOSMEs program).
In its twenty years in existence, ORGANIBIO has become the
acknowledged representative of the French bioscience sector by striving to promote
dialogue and solidarity between the members of this industrial grouping and
to be the efficient spokesman of these different biotechnology companies.
ORGANIBIO was also behind the creation of EUROPABIO,
the European Association for Bioindustries, and remains one of its active members
